Due Diligence for Investors

Venture capital firms, growth equity investors, and corporate development teams engage Variant Energy to validate technical claims, assess IP defensibility, and benchmark battery startups against industry best practices.

With direct experience in gigafactory-scale cell manufacturing at Tesla and six years leading cell engineering at a high-profile battery materials startup, I provide the technical depth to separate engineering reality from pitch-deck optimism.

Typical engagements include:

  • Technical assessment of cell design, manufacturing processes, and scale-up readiness
  • IP evaluation—patent portfolio strength, freedom to operate, defensibility
  • Team capability review—can this team execute the technical roadmap?
  • Manufacturing cost modeling and capital expenditure validation
  • Competitive positioning relative to incumbent and emerging players

Startup Advisory

Early-stage battery companies face a common challenge: building credible technical roadmaps without the benefit of experienced cell manufacturing leadership. I work directly with founders and technical teams to accelerate development and avoid expensive mistakes.

Advisory engagements typically focus on:

  • Development roadmap planning—sequencing R&D milestones to hit investor and customer gates
  • Lab-to-pilot scale-up strategy—equipment selection, facility layout, process transfer
  • Manufacturing process design—electrode coating, cell assembly, formation, and test
  • Technical team coaching—upskilling junior engineers, establishing SOPs and best practices
  • Investor readiness—preparing technical narratives and data packages for fundraising

Engagements range from one-time working sessions to ongoing fractional advisory relationships.

Expert Network Consulting

Investment banks, management consulting firms, and expert networks regularly engage Variant Energy for direct insight into battery technology markets.

Common topics include:

  • Cell prototyping equipment landscape—vendors, capabilities, market dynamics
  • Lithium-ion manufacturing process bottlenecks and yield drivers
  • Lab-to-pilot-to-production scale-up challenges for next-generation chemistries
  • LFP, solid-state, silicon anode, and sodium-ion technology readiness
  • Gigafactory equipment supply chain and capital intensity trends

Available through GLG, Guidepoint, AlphaSights, Tegus, and direct engagement.

Background

I spent six years at Sila Nanotechnologies as Lead Cell Engineer, responsible for cell prototyping, electrochemical testing, and scale-up of silicon anode technology from lab to pilot production. That experience—building cell prototyping capabilities from scratch and debugging the gap between materials promise and cell-level reality—shaped my understanding of what it takes to commercialize battery technology.

At Tesla, I led development of the first GWh-scale manufacturing equipment for 4680 tabless cell production. Working at gigafactory scale crystallized the difference between equipment that works in the lab and equipment that works at volume—a perspective I now bring to both the advisory practice and to Variant Energy's prototyping equipment.

In 2023, I founded Variant Energy to build the lab-scale cell prototyping equipment I wished existed during my years in battery R&D. That equipment is now used by Tesla, Toyota, Lyten, Gotion, Mitra Chem, and university research labs.

The advisory practice exists because the same expertise that informs equipment design—hands-on cell manufacturing, scale-up experience, and deep technical networks—is valuable to investors and companies navigating the battery industry.
